RICK FLYNN
Richard Flynn, is an all-round athlete – a runner, a skier, skydiver, sea kayaker, white water rafter, hiker
and mountain climber, who has a keen interest in wilderness excursions. His scholarship will help fund a three-month
trek under the auspices of the National Leadership School of Wyoming into the wilderness of Patagonia, Chile. Here,
Richard will learn advanced techniques in leadership, mountaineering, canyoneering and environmental preservation
feeding his goals as an athlete and leader.
"I would like to open the minds of LGBT and straights alike so that LGBT kids can run to their dreams", Richard said.
"My ultimate goal is to found a program in which all students can feel confident and accepted while experiencing the most
rigorous wilderness and athletic training."
Richard graduated from Rutgers University where he was an active member of BIGLARU
(Bi, Gay and Lesbian at Rutgers University). He also worked as a fundraiser for the Catholic AIDS Network and
the AIDS Hospice Center in Newark, New Jersey.

MELISSA GINDEN
Melissa Gindin is a softball player who was captain of the Abraham Lincoln High School Softball Team, a Bronze Medal winner
in New York's 2006 Big Apple Games and an active member of her high school's Rainbow Alliance.
Melissa was recently accepted at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth where she will study political science.
"My passion is softball and this grant will help pay for my education while allowing me to spend another four years
playing the game which I love more than words can explain", she said. After graduating Melissa has set her sights
on entering politics.

MICHAEL TOTARO
Michael Totaro is the third scholarship recipient who, as a member of New York Frontrunners, has already distinguished
himself as a talented runner earning "local elite" status. Michael is a marathoner who has participated in the New York
Marathon and in the Honolulu Marathon as a member of the AIDS Marathon Team.
Last year, during his first year at the New York Law School, Michael was elected to the Executive Board of the
Stonewall Law Students Association. This summer he produced a New York Guide for incoming students covering health care,
nightlife and gay and lesbian sport teams.
Michael said, "This scholarship will assist me in continuing my racing and training by lessening the financial burden
of law school tuition. My ultimate professional goal is to work on issues concerning international business and corporate
social responsibility. I would love to be able to work at a government agency that monitors and regulates corporate practices.
I am especially interested in areas concerning the environment and labor".
